Finally dragged my 1982 Yamaha Sr250 down three flights of stairs and got to cruise around on it this week. Still needs some solid work before it’s completely reliable, but a fun little thumper for the city.

Thanks to everyone who came over Sunday nights to work on this thing. Big thanks to Ricky and Adam. Faulty spark plug wires, burnt starter, dirty ignition. Those dudes found it all.

Last Sunday a few of us helped Mick sort out his SR’s wiring. The stock harness, in my opinion, is unnecessarily bulky with safety relays and switches. This inspired me to see if I could design something streamlined while still using the stock controls and dash gauge… this is what I came up with:

I found the stock diagram at the Philly Free Library. They have a decent selection of automotive and motorcycle manuals in their reference section. “Being a Yamaha owner, you obviously prefer a quality product”… These old shop manuals are awesome.

So after one week on the Yamaha, I’ve accomplished some tasks and created new ones:

  • Got all the electrics pulled of the bike and laid out to draw a new, simpler diagram.
  • Putting clubmans on a bike make everything better. Stripped the crap paint off the tank.
  • All the hardware on this model is pretty beat.  About 20 Phillips heads will need to be replaced.
  • Week 2 will be finishing the electrics, cleaning and re-installing carbs, and looking into tires that fit my budget.

So I picked up a little winter project to work on the next couple months. I got a 1982 Yamaha SR250 for $200 with a title. It is a single cylinder, single carb. I plan to try some new modifications on it that I wouldn’t want on my CB550, while trying to keep the project under $450.

I’m thinking doing a flat, raw tank with a brown, slim seat. Cork grips up front. Big, front tire. No signals. Chopped fender. 1 Pod filter. No gauges. Black rims.

Right now I’m pulling all the electrical to come up with a simpler wiring system. Carbs next, then some new bars. I’ll post progress as it happens.
