Juston Stens is a Philly dude who has made it out to some of our Thursday rides on his 650 Triumph. He was the original drummer for Dr. Dog and has now started his own solo project under the name, “The Get Real Gang”. He recently took off on his old cycle to travel and record with different artists across US. He hit us up to let us know his plans knowing we’d appreciate that he was doing it all on his Triumph.

“This August I will embark on my most creative and ambitious project yet. I will ride my motorcycle across the US visiting friends/musicians for a few days at a time to co-write and record one song at each stop using only the gear/instruments that are available, ultimately creating an album. I am looking forward to collaborating with some of my favorite song writers and musicians and meeting more along the way. I will leave Philadelphia with a batch of tunes in my head, but I hope discover new things at each step of the journey and write new songs as I go.”

Last Sunday we decided to take a trip down to Ocean City to spend the day relaxing in the sun. My lady Juli shot these photos while riding on the back of my 550…

Chris led us on some nice roads through Jersey.

Kevin roasting the RD smoking out everyone behind us.

Ricky’s pull cable broke about 10 miles into the trip but he was able to jerry rig the push cable to work. Forward rolling throttle is weird but that didn’t keep Ricky from chilling on the ride.

Good time, Good friends, Good roads, and Good weather.

When working on vintage bikes in the shop, it seems that a good chunk of time is spent just looking for a special bolt, screw, spacer, lever, petcock…well you get the idea.  The devil is in the details.  Luckily, the bike archive at Liberty Vintage is pretty large, so we can usually go picking through to find what we need.  However, sometimes that special part has already been stripped from the bike.  Then we have to improvise, or just make it from scratch.  The problem solving can be pretty fun, and the cutting and welding metal is even better.

The owner of this triumph hard tail brought in a harley sissy bar to be attached.  What seemed like an easy add on, ended up taking a bit of time to complete.  The harley sissy bar was not offset for the rear end, so when we tried to attach it, it hit the tire.  Fast forward a bunch of brainstorming – should we cut the fender bracket, raise it and re-weld? should we bend one side out and add length?  should we make a whole new sissy bar all together?  Finally we settle on a couple of nice, shiny spacers on the opposite side of the wheel.  Looks a little weird and uneven.  But fuck it, this bike is all kinds of weird.

“oh just attach this sissy bar please”

front end, so you know get an idea of what we’re working on here

Everything about this is awesome.

Jason, Dan, Vinny, and Eric had a wild time past weekend. Those guys have an impressive shop setup and are a wealth of cycle and fabrication knowledge.
