I’ve been spending most cold nights in my workshop slowly working on my list of projects. The KZ750 has been starting to take shape a little more. A couple nights ago I finished the new seat rails which got rid of the drop seat look. Lots more to go but having fun working on it.

in Berks County, to break out the Cast & Salvage 2-strokes.
It was good to see us country kids and the Honda Elsinore
back in their natural environment.

1975 Yamaha DT175 https://www.chinonthetank.com/2013/05/1975-yamaha-dt175/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2013/05/1975-yamaha-dt175/#comments Wed, 29 May 2013 12:58:55 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=10688 I recently picked up this DT175. I’ve been looking for an old 2-stroke Yamaha enduro for awhile and found this one for a good deal out in the Poconos. It was a shitty drive out of the city in rush hour traffic but it was well worth it. It’s a bit beat up but everything is there and the engine has 120psi compression. It should be back on the road in a few weeks.

yamaha_dt175-2
yamaha_dt175-3

Pumped it came with the original rack. These go for way too much money on ebay.

yamaha_dt175-4

The 175 came with some big upgrades for 2-strokes in the 70’s including a reed block (the piece between the carburetor and engine).

yamaha_dt175-5

The head has 2 spots for spark plugs (2nd spot has a cap on it in the pic) incase you foul a plug you can just pop the cap onto the other spark plug and keep riding.

yamaha_dt175-6

Yea, the tank is shitty inside and needs to be sealed with some Caswell.

yamaha_dt175-7

This was just the beginning of the electrical mess on this bike. I unwrapped a section with speaker wire and Pepboys crimp connectors… gross.

yamaha_dt175-8

Rear wheel needs some new spokes and a truing.

How-to | CB750 Rear Frame Loop https://www.chinonthetank.com/2013/01/how-to-cb750-rear-frame/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2013/01/how-to-cb750-rear-frame/#comments Thu, 17 Jan 2013 16:32:44 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=10336 Stripping an old bike down to its bare bones looks awesome but can often look unfinished unless few simple modifications are done to complete the look. Of these, fabricating a rear loop is the easiest way to clean up the rear of the bike. It also stiffens it and gives some more options for mounting the fender, tail light, and license plate.

This is a 1979 CB750 frame that came to our shop with the rear already chopped off and needing the rear loop fabricated. Here’s the steps to make that happen:

1. Clean up the frame and remove the extra metal that was used for bulking up the oem pinched frame ends using a chisel and folding it in on itself until it falls out.

2. Measure the inside diameter (ID), outside diameter (OD), and center-to-center width. You’ll need this for the layout of the frame hoop and picking out tubing.

3. Cut 2″ pieces from tubing with the same OD as the ID of the frame. These will be used as slugs between the frame and the new section which helps align and strength the joint. I missed getting a photo of this mocked up in the frame but you get the concept.

4. Using the appropriate die, make a 180 degree bend in the same OD tubing as the frame.

5. Layout out your cuts to fit the frame width and tack it together to check fitment. All butt joints should be beveled to prep for welding.

6. Weld!

7. Clean up the welds using whatever method you prefer. I like to use a flap wheel to do the majority of the work while leaving a small amount proud of the tubing OD to be finished off with hand files in order to get seamless, smooth finish leaving no indication of a joint.

Get in touch with us at Cast & Salvage if you’re looking to get a rear hoop or any other frame modification done on your project bike. We love this stuff.

1944 South Bend 10″ Quick Change Lathe https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/12/1944-south-bend-lathe-clean-up/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/12/1944-south-bend-lathe-clean-up/#comments Thu, 13 Dec 2012 19:08:06 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=10168 This lathe has been a invaluable addition at Cast & Salvage but being 68 years old it was in need of some attention. We’ve been using it as is since we picked it up this summer but with more lathe projects we wanted to get it cleaned, lubed, missing pieces replaced, and just get it in better condition to keep it from getting anymore unnecessary wear.

The apron mostly cleaned up.

Everything is covered in old caked on shitty grease and oil with metal shavings.

Unfortunately, the bed rails have some decent wear, but it shouldn’t be an issue for the things I’ll be turning. I plan on running some tests to check the accuracy of it.

We got a bunch of extra stuff with the lathe including two 3 jaw chucks, one 4 jaw chuck, collets, taper attachment, live centers (although most of them are trashed), face plate, oem tools…

Cleaning off layers of grim revealed some cool looking badges and stampings.

Next post on the lathe will be about accuracy tests and then motorcycle parts.

1966 Suzuki T20 “Super Six” | X6 Hustler https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/12/1966-suzuki-t20-super-six-x6-hustler/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/12/1966-suzuki-t20-super-six-x6-hustler/#comments Fri, 07 Dec 2012 05:31:38 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=10124 Last week Rick and I got a call in the shop from a lady looking to get rid of an old bike that had been sitting in her in her garage for the past 40 years. She wanted to mail us some photos but instead we decided take a ride out to her place in Mt Airy to check it out with the hopes of finding something awesome. We were a little disappointed to find a Suzuki… but this little 250cc 2-stroke is pretty rad and apparently was pretty unique back in its day.

Some interesting facts about them:

– Only produced between 1965 and 1967
– 29 hp @ 7500rpm
– 6-speed transmission
– First tubular steel frame from Suzuki – all previous were pressed steel
– Left side kick starter
– 0-60mph in 6 sec
– 15.1 1/4 mile

It’s a little rough but should clean up nicely and make for a fun bike.

A serious trip for 70’s CB350. The bike had some serious oil leaks and needed some tuning up which was the reason for the visit.

We pushed off some other work and got the bike on the lift and disassembled.

Replaced the leaking seals and gaskets.

Sunday morning coffee waiting for Sterling to come by.

He’s traveling with his buddy who is on this 80’s BMW… not quite the same class as a 350.

Back on the road!

I’ve been helped out numerous times while on the road (Kansas Larry) by many people whose hospitality surprised me. It was cool to return the favor and help out another rider riding the shit out of his old cycle.

It’s a popular CB to modify which made it fun to try and make it unique with our style. We’ve finishing up the last little bit of fabrication work so I took some photos of some of the parts we designed/made so you can see them in the raw.

Stainless steel headlight mount.

Round bar shift lever.

Battery box with key mount.

Rear hoop/handle lugged into the frame.

SL125 tank with new mounts.

Fender chopped, flared, and mounted with some dual sport tires that fit the look perfectly.

Getting some feedback from friends stopping by…

Round bar fender mounts with lugs mocked up.

Brazing them together.

Done.

We’ll have it reassembled and running next week so check back for more photos or come see it at the Trenton Arts Festival.

It’s quick shot south from my place in Kensington to Ed’s place in South Philly which I did this past Sunday. It was an easy decision to take a break in the workshop to bring some tools down to Ed so he could finish swapping the rocker cover on his cb650.

OEM plus! I love the look of clean clubmans.

Reminds me of the years working on the sidewalk when we lived across the street from the BP where we meet for the Thursday ride.

And I do not miss working on the sidewalk.

Valve adjustment.

Highway cruising back home.

I met Mike years ago when he worked at Little Devil for those of you who remember when they had the warehouse and the sickest bowl setup.

Anyway Mike’s a good dude so if you get a chance to get out to ride to skate this year make sure to pick up an issue and a calendar. Cycles and babes… good stuff.

Issue 2 features some photos from our friend Mike Persico.

She’s a real deal drilling machine.

I really like the simple detail of the riveted badges proudly displaying where they were made.

We’ve been cleaning, oiling, and checking over the entire machine and noticed that the chuck spins slightly off center. After removing the pressed on jacobs chuck it appears the spindle doesn’t sit absolutely straight. Hopefully with some more investigation she’ll be true and ready for some serious speed hole drilling.
