He’s a cool dude. Kills it riding trails.

Even if you don’t like bmx… you’ll enjoy this vid. It’s mainly about Clint’s “living-free” lifestyle.

He has an old Airstream trailer he lives out of and tows around the country with his veggie-diesel van. He travels for free due to getting/stealing used veggie oil from chinese food places.

He has a cool cb350 with one of the best bmx bike racks I’ve seen.

I’ve been thinking… as a web designer, it’d be cool to try and live like this someday and survive off freelance web work and see america. Maybe…

Specifically “fashion/design/lifestyle” tumblr’s. One that I really like is called the Pursuit Aesthetic.

They rarely have cycles on it, but when they do, they’re normally good ones.

This cb350 really stood out to me.

  • love love love that exhaust
  • look close. it’s a hardtail, which lets him get the rear frame super close to the tire. pretty original

Adam and I went out and had some fun with it today.

Nashville to Maine | CB350 https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/06/nashville-to-maine-cb350/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2012/06/nashville-to-maine-cb350/#comments Mon, 04 Jun 2012 13:55:09 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=7595 Over the weekend this guy Sterling showed up at Cast & Salvage on his CB350 on his way from Nashville heading towards Maine. A serious trip for 70’s CB350. The bike had some serious oil leaks and needed some tuning up which was the reason for the visit.

We pushed off some other work and got the bike on the lift and disassembled.

Replaced the leaking seals and gaskets.

Sunday morning coffee waiting for Sterling to come by.

He’s traveling with his buddy who is on this 80’s BMW… not quite the same class as a 350.

Back on the road!

I’ve been helped out numerous times while on the road (Kansas Larry) by many people whose hospitality surprised me. It was cool to return the favor and help out another rider riding the shit out of his old cycle.

It’s a popular CB to modify which made it fun to try and make it unique with our style. We’ve finishing up the last little bit of fabrication work so I took some photos of some of the parts we designed/made so you can see them in the raw.

Stainless steel headlight mount.

Round bar shift lever.

Battery box with key mount.

Rear hoop/handle lugged into the frame.

SL125 tank with new mounts.

Fender chopped, flared, and mounted with some dual sport tires that fit the look perfectly.

Getting some feedback from friends stopping by…

Round bar fender mounts with lugs mocked up.

Brazing them together.

Done.

We’ll have it reassembled and running next week so check back for more photos or come see it at the Trenton Arts Festival.

Ocean City Ride https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/07/ocean-city-ride/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/07/ocean-city-ride/#comments Fri, 01 Jul 2011 05:26:30 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=5186 Last Sunday we decided to take a trip down to Ocean City to spend the day relaxing in the sun. My lady Juli shot these photos while riding on the back of my 550…

Chris led us on some nice roads through Jersey.

Kevin roasting the RD smoking out everyone behind us.

Ricky’s pull cable broke about 10 miles into the trip but he was able to jerry rig the push cable to work. Forward rolling throttle is weird but that didn’t keep Ricky from chilling on the ride.

Good time, Good friends, Good roads, and Good weather.

Adventures of a Shop Girl https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/04/adventures-of-a-shop-girl/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/04/adventures-of-a-shop-girl/#comments Thu, 14 Apr 2011 00:49:36 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=4482 Hey everyone, this is Janelle…newest contributor, and new pal/rider with the guys here. I’ve been riding for about a year and a half, as long as I’ve had my 1971 cb350. A couple weeks ago, I decided I should finally start learning about my own bike, and the vintage cycles that I love. I hit up Adam Cramer at Liberty Vintage, and just like that I am the new shop girl there! I am totally stoked to learn everything I can about old cycles, especially since my own leaves me stranded sometimes…how can I stay mad at her though?

So, I was thinking that there might be some riders out there (maybe girls?!!!!) just getting into riding or vintage bikes, that like me, are eager to learn more. I’m gonna share some of my motorcycle shop weekends with you while I’m doing it. I hope to meet more of you on rides this summer.

Sunday felt like a real spring day so we took advantage.

We met some new friends along the way that joined in for a quick ride.

Roasting one of my favorite turns in Fairmount.

XS Front End Swap for CB350 https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/03/xs-front-end-swap-for-cb350/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/03/xs-front-end-swap-for-cb350/#comments Thu, 03 Mar 2011 17:40:26 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=4120 Hey guys, thought I’d share some info on the front end swap I did over the winter on my ’72 CB350. I decided to go this route for a number of reasons, but it started out as just wanting to beef up my fork tube diameter from spaghetti noodle thin 33mm to a sturdy 35mm. In doing research I also found that road racers look for triple trees with four bolt pinch mounts on the bottom yoke as apposed to the CB’s two, giving more clamping surface area and a more secure attachment. This left me with a few options but I decided to try out a Yamaha XS front end because of the added benefit of aluminum shouldered rims and a simple dual disk conversion. Took a lot of time researching and sourcing parts but here’s the quick version:

The assembled front end consisting of XS650 trees, wheels, and forks.  Brake calipers and dual lines are from a XS750 and the brake rotors are from a XS1100.  I used a super helpful Yamaha Part Finder website to figure out which parts are interchangeable between the different years and models.

Tapered bearing kit for CB350 from All Balls Racing works perfect with the XS stem, no modifications needed.  I also bought a bearing kit for a XS650 thinking I would need to combine pieces of both but since I didn’t need it if anyone is looking to upgrade their XS bearings I’ll part with them for cheap.

Lower bearing in place and new upper bearing race installed.  The kit replaces both stock ball bearing races.

Final product:

Brake master cylinder and stainless lines I picked up from MikesXS.com

All in all I’m happy to have a rock solid front end.  Being such a light bike dual disks are probably overkill… but it looks bad-ass and I’ll be able to stop using one finger.  Can’t wait to get it on the road and test it out.  I’m doing a shit-ton of other modifications to pretty much every aspect of this bike so I’ll share them as they get completed if you guys like.

MLK Jr. Day Weekend Motorcycle Teardown https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/01/mlk-jr-day-weekend-motorcycle-teardown/ https://www.chinonthetank.com/2011/01/mlk-jr-day-weekend-motorcycle-teardown/#comments Tue, 18 Jan 2011 20:12:01 +0000 http://www.chinonthetank.com/?p=3720

I took off work and spent 4 days in the “Jankyington” garage. We burned enough wood to build a house in Kensington, which is to say, a fair amount of wood. Together with the Yerkes brothers, a lifetime supply of Sly Fox and a killer high from aircraft stripper, we had a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend no one would ever forget.

I began tearing down the top-end of my 500 with the help of a Clymer book. Essentially I’m doing the same rebuild Ed did with the 650, so I’ll hold off on the details during this stage. I’m taking it to the same machine shop, Mar Automotive, when the rebuild kit comes in.

Ricky and Dana gutted the engine from the Baja 350 project.

On day 2 I bought a bench grinder for the shop, so as we tore parts off, everything got a wire-wheel treatment and high-gloss polish. This was quite possibly the best investment I’ve ever made.

An old-fashioned steel wool polish.

Dana rips out the carbs on the 200T for a cleaning.

Thanks to Mick for the seat. We were almost convinced it was the ugliest cafe seat until I took a saw to it and trimmed more than half of it off. A very productive weekend. I’ll update as the 500 progresses.
